I've started to figure out what I enjoy doing most and how I interact best with other people. I've always been a quiet person who does more talking inside my head than out loud. While this has helped me learn new things, when it comes to working with other people I discovered I don't get very far. As I have slowly branched out into the world, I have figured out how much I enjoy sharing things with other people.
Growing up, I conversed with a lot of random people online and I loved giving advice or helping solve random problems. This became my role in high school. I was the nerdy kid everyone asked for help with computer issues, which was fine with me because I enjoyed helping and learning.
After high school, while working and studying at Purdue University, I hung out with more tech-savvy people than the ones I grew up with. This really helped give me a way to start sharing all my favorite tech-goodies with others. I became more and more talkative when it came to discussing things. I even started to annoy myself with how much I would talk.
In the past two years or so, I've noticed that I really enjoy helping teach people things. I've shown a few friends (including my girlfriend) how to make the most basic website with just a few squares and links. The joy I get from teaching them the most rudimentary things is a lot more than I was expecting. Once I realized how much I enjoyed teaching people, I've started to take any chance I can get to show somebody something new, or help them learn how to accomplish a task.
Earlier this week I showed a fellow employee, Matthew aka Double-T, how to do random bits of php programming, html and javascript. I had lots of fun showing him the different ways to do certain things and the problems I've overcome. Hopefully, he'll come back to learn more!
As a result of teaching others and fixing their tech problems, I've ended up learning even more myself. It's really a win-win situation.
